The Serano mountains (1429m a.s.l.) and Brunette (1421m a.s.l.) form part of the Umbria-Marche Appennine, a well defined geomorphological and lithologic entity which can be described as a series of folds and overthusts arranged in an arc like fashion with oriental convexity. Micrite limestone of the Majolica Formation is visible in the peak areas: this has deposited in a sedimentation environment of pelagic type starting from the Upper Titonian (Upper Jurassic, i.e. 150-145 million years ago).

Visible along the ridge are interesting karstic morphotypes, formed from the corrosive action of the meteoric waters on the limestone, such as the dolines, which are present just beneath the peak of Monte Brunette, to the west, and the karstic plains like that of Rio Secco. In proximity of Monte Serano’s peak, the strong anthropization has modified the mountain landscape. This place, in fact, is considered strategic for its position, exposure and altitude and presently hosts a great number of radio-television relay stations. The slopes of the Serano-Brunette ridge are mostly covered with mixed tree forests.

Conceived by some members of the Cai section of Spoleto (Italian Alpine Club) and then realized with the contribution also of the Foligno Section of the CAI, the path was created for the purpose of promoting and enhancing the hilly area which characterizes a large part of the Umbrian territory and which is dominated by olive groves. The path winds along a great part of the territory at 500-600 m. above sea level at easy gradients, offering the hiker the most beautiful views as well as vegetation, geological and historic-artistic aspects of great interest. There are a number of stopover places where one can spend the night. In the lager centres like Spoleto, Campello, Trevi, Foligno, Spello and Assisi there are plenty to chose from.


But also along the itinerary, at times in the small villages crossed or in their environs, one can find accommodation mainly in farm tourism bed and breakfasts or holiday homes. Particularly interesting are the ground arrangement works like the terracing of the steeper hillsides which one encounters along the path. These were created with particular skill by the local farmers and allowed, over time, to create a correct hydrological system for the whole terrain. The itinerary also crosses a series of small urban settlements which, developed during the Roman era to escape a progressive swamping of the plains, are still discretely preserved and known today as the “castles”.


Open all year round, the Olive Grove Footpath is easily reached from the highway and railroad; in particular: the Spoleto-Foligno leg of the Rome-Ancona line and the Foligno-Assisi leg of the Foligno Terontola line. This easy access to the area enables one to personalize the itinerary to one’s wishes. The olive grove footpath The olive pathOne of the stretches of the olive grove footpath itinerary, between Spoleto and Foligno, maybe the most picturesque, is the stretch which from the church of St. Michael Archangel leads to Trevi along the olive farming at the foot of the hills. A landscape which is still well preserved and where, as well as the thousands of red olive trees (the so called moraiole olives), one can admire the man made elements (banks, terraces, enclosures, dovecote towers) built to cultivate olive trees over the centuries.

The route connects the church of Sant’Emiliano, in the historic center of Trevi, with Santo Stefano (and San Costanzo) in Piaggia and with the wonderful abbey of San Pietro in Bovara. The itinerary continues in the olive grove of our hills, leading hikers to visit the Romanesque churches of San Pietro a Pettine and San Nicolò, passing through Sant’Andrea and San Donato.
