Trevi awards

In 2020, Trevi earned this highly prestigious European award, which launches the city onto the international scene as a place that has brought out the value of its olive grove landscape, protecting it and promoting it with full respect for the rural tradition of these lands.


The academic committee coordinated by Giuseppe Roma and composed by chairman Stefano Pisani, secretary general Pier Giorgio Oliveti, and Luca Filippetti, an expert in digital communication, analyzed the various applications received in previous months, underlining that despite the difficult situation caused by the pandemic, many towns were working hard on their project proposals and thus competing for the “Orange Snail” prize. In all, fifteen candidates from the “Cittaslow” circuit in six different countries submitted their projects and initiatives to the committee.

On the 14th of March 2019 Trevi was awarded honors by MIBACT, the Italian Ministry of Culture, as an outstanding example in Italy of towns bringing out the value of their landscape. The project “The olive grove landscape and biodiversity in Trevi” was considered especially interesting due to the steps put in place to protect the landscape, accompanied by promotional and educational activities to spread awareness of environmental protection issues among the public.


The Municipality of Trevi took part in the competition by proposing its local territory as a candidate. Its strategy of development and promotion in line with a bottom-up approach is based on the particular features that set the area apart, identifying the fundamental issues in local needs and potential, interpreting them from the viewpoint of their environmental sustainability.

For naturalistic, historical, cultural, and architectural reasons, Trevi is the open-air symbol of a land that embodies the values of sustainable development and protecting biodiversity and the landscape, particularly olive groves.

The Municipality of Trevi took part in this competition with its Olive Oil Museum, an example of tourism institutions linked to olive oil. The Museum is among the three finalists in the olive oil museum category. There are seventeen finalists in the First National Olive Oil Tourism Competition. The jury of experts, chaired by Professor Roberta Garibaldi, selected them from the 118 organizations competing in the six categories.

Among the three finalists in the category of museums on olive oil, underground oil mills and historic olive groves is the Olive Oil Museum of Trevi, the first such public museum in Europe, in the historic center of the medieval town also known as an Olive Oil Capital. Competing for the winner's title are the Sabina Olive Oil Museum in Castelnuovo di Farfa (Rieti) and the Carlo Carli – Fratelli Carli S.p.A. Olive Oil Museum in Imperia (Imola).

The competition seeks to gather together and tell the stories of the best tourism projects connected to olive oil promoted by the Olive Oil Towns. This is a great opportunity to give visibility and value to tourism offerings and experiential activities emerging from our local areas, which will also be highlighted by the media and promoted on the website and social media channels of the Olive Oil Towns Association.
